How might music teachers help their students cope with the anxiety-provoking aspects of public performance? This article aims to provide some elements to answer this question. It is important to consider that public performance is one of the main aspects of musical practice from the start of the learning process. Given the high prevalence of music performance anxiety—MPA among musicians of all levels and ages, the teacher has an important role. Based on a literature review, the sources of MPA are analyzed and, for each of them, strategies that could be used by a music teacher are indicated. Emphasis is placed on prevention and on the importance of raising music teachers’ awareness of MPA.

Collaborative Musical Creativity between Students and Adults: The Sonorous Paella

While creativity is a key element of contemporary curriculum frameworks around the world, it is still insufficiently fostered in formal education settings. This study analyzes a project for collaborative musical creativity, entitled The Sonorous Paella. Participants (N = 12) were eight Year 4 secondary students, two professional musicians, an artist-in-residence, and a music teacher. Drawing on a graphic musical score, the participants worked together for 1.5 months to produce a group composition and performance. The previous findings have shown that musicians as well as music teachers differ in personality characteristics from the general population. There are strong indications that musicians are exposed to numerous stressful situations during their education and professional life. This article shows the design, development and evaluation of a software for teaching support in a music training course for pre-service non music teachers. Teacher beliefs about student agency in whole-class playing

This study explores music teachers’ beliefs of student agency in whole-class playing and investigates what characterises student agency through teachers’ values, actions and observations within this unique multimodal and -dimensional learning environment. Our abductive analysis of 11 interviews reveals that the role of teacher support is significant in enacting students’ agency. This study provides insights into student agency through the eyes and actions of teachers within the context of whole-class playing and suggests that the enactment of different aspects of student agency is an essential feature necessary for whole-class playing to succeed. peerReviewed
